A is for Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpurerum'

One of the things I discovered when photographing plants is how interesting they are when you get up close. The structures are clear and the colours are much more subtle. I just wish my photograph could convey the full complexity of those colours. There's something about dark red/purple colours which present a real challenge for colour accuracy.

Nevertheless, botanical accuracy aside, in this instance I like the aesthetic of the colours in this photograph of this very dark red Tree Aeonium.

Who knew I would get fascinated by succulents? I certainly didn't before I started photographing them.

A Daily Photo

Makingamark - A Daily Photo is about creating pictures rather than photography per se. It's all about the process of seeing, selecting and creating a personal visual identity.

My photographs are from the past and the present - from here and there - within the UK and abroad.

Each day a photo is uploaded to an alphabetical oriented post.

These photos reflect what particularly interests me - such as important elements of design like shape, colour and texture. Landscapes, flowers, plants and markets are also an abiding interest - and round shapes anywhere!

The process of taking thousands of photos of different subjects has helped me a a great deal in:
- defining the scope of what interests me visually
- tackling practical problems with picture-making
- working out what makes a good picture

- directing the focus of my art.

Reviewing my photos to identify one to post on this blog also enables me to revisit and rediscover visual memories - and refine my visual interests. I'm looking at old photos with a new perspective - and so the process continues.

PS I don't use an SLR and my current camera is not that sophisticated. See - I said it wasn't about lenses and f stops!!
